The image of St. Wilgefortis discovered in the collection of a Graz museum forms the backdrop for a self-portrait of the artist – but with male characteristics (hairy legs, moustache, wrap-around sun glasses). In response to the pleading from the saint for transformation her face became hidden behind a beard so that she could escape marriage. The picture uses this image in a variety of ways to address conflict situations which cannot simply be covered by the term “gender debates”, but which must be studied – here and now – on the social/political level in conjunction with this simple but clear message.
