She attended Grinnell colleg ('73-'76), studying sociology. She began her career as a free-lance photographer in NY in 1977.
Her work is represented in collections including The Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art, Foundation Cartier Paris, The Houston Museum of Fine Arts and The Los Angeles Country Museum of Art.
She is the recipient of a 1988 Leica Medal of Excellence, a 1990 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a 1995 Louise Comfort Tiffany Award.
Two monographs, Dirty Window (1995) and Shopping (1999) were published by Scalo.
She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
